Thousands Join LA Worker Strike Over Labor Practices

Los Angeles, California — Over 55,000 Los Angeles County employees commenced a 48-hour worker strike on Monday evening, protesting what they describe as ongoing unfair labor practices. The strike, led by members of SEIU Local 721, marks a potential first in the county’s history and threatens to disrupt several public services.

Picket lines began forming at 7 p.m., with union members across departments—including public works, health services, and social welfare—joining the walkout. The union alleges that Los Angeles County has committed 44 labor law violations that have gone unresolved for six months.

David Green, president of SEIU 721, stated that union members are dedicated public servants who feel overlooked and undervalued. He emphasized that the strike is intended to urge the county to resume genuine negotiations.

Services likely affected include non-urgent county health clinics, library operations, trash collection, homeless outreach, and wildfire debris removal.

Union leaders accuse the county of avoiding meaningful bargaining, using surveillance on union activity, and failing to address 12,000 vacant positions. They also criticized the county’s financial priorities, citing a $205 million downtown office project, while frontline workers reportedly received a 0% cost-of-living increase offer.

County officials dispute the claims, pointing to fiscal pressures from recent wildfires and legal settlements.
