Sushi Restaurant Fined $50K for Violations of Unpaid Wages

San Leandro, California — Angry Fish Sushi, a San Leandro restaurant, has been fined more than $50,000 by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) following an investigation into wage violations, according to a recent press release. The restaurant faces $43,000 in unpaid wages, damages, and $7,800 in civil penalties, affecting 24 employees.

The DOL investigation revealed that Angry Fish Sushi violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) by failing to pay overtime to employees compensated in cash.

Investigators also found that the restaurant’s owner and a manager unlawfully withheld a portion of employees’ tips, a common infraction in the restaurant industry. Additionally, minimum wage violations were uncovered.

Francisco Ocampo, District Director of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division in San Jose, emphasized the agency’s dedication to ensuring restaurant workers receive wages and overtime. He added that the DOL will take all necessary steps to safeguard employees from exploitative labor practices.

Angry Fish Sushi, established in 2015 on East 14th Street, has been penalized for its non-compliance with federal labor laws. California workers are reminded of their rights under the FLSA, including protection against unpaid wages.
