Federal Investigation Details Unsafe Housing Conditions

A federal investigation into Lucky Growers Inc., an agricultural employer based in San Marcos, uncovered multiple violations tied to worker housing and employment disclosures.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, inspectors found that approximately 30 agricultural workers were housed in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Investigators also determined that the employer charged workers rent in violation of federal regulations.

The inspection revealed structural damage, mold growth, insect and rodent infestations, and missing or makeshift doors in living spaces. Investigators also noted the presence of propane tanks inside rooms, inadequate lighting, and the absence of fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and first aid kits.

Additionally, the employer failed to provide the required information about job duties and housing terms before the commencement of employment. As a result, the agency recovered $171,400 in back wages and imposed civil penalties exceeding $76,000.
