19 Car Washes Fined $1.3M for Wage Theft Violations

Los Angeles, California— The California Labor Commissioner’s Office (LCO) has issued $1.3 million in fines against 19 car washes in Los Angeles and Orange counties for wage theft violations and civil penalties. These businesses were found to have engaged in illegal practices affecting approximately 960 workers.

The bulk of the fines, totaling $810,920, were directed at two car washes: Redondo Auto Spa LLC, located in Redondo Beach, and Rock N Roll Car Wash LLC, based in Hermosa Beach. Both companies failed to comply with state labor laws, including improper wage payments, failure to provide required rest breaks, and neglecting to register with the Labor Commissioner’s Office.

California Labor Commissioner Lilia García-Brower emphasized the vulnerability of car wash workers to wage theft and other violations, noting that many businesses bypass required registration to evade accountability. “This case highlights our commitment to ensuring that employers follow the law, pay workers for all wages earned, and provide them the protections they deserve,” she stated.

Investigations also revealed that workers faced retaliation for cooperating with the investigation, including wrongful terminations and reduced hours. Retaliation cases are currently under review. This action is part of the LCO’s ongoing California Strategic Enforcement Partnership.
