Workplace Know Your Rights Act Compliance Begins February

California – The Workplace Know Your Rights Act is set to introduce new compliance requirements that directly affect workers across California. This law expands the information employees receive about their legal protections at work, aiming to improve transparency, awareness, and accountability.

California Introduces New Worker Notice Requirements

California lawmakers approved Senate Bill 294 as part of a broader package of employment laws signed in October 2025. The law establishes the Workplace Know Your Rights Act and sets clear deadlines for employer compliance.

Effective February 1, employers must provide a stand-alone written notice of employee rights to all current employees and new hires at the start of employment. These notices must also be sent annually to any authorized employee representatives.

The Labor Commissioner has released official templates in English and Spanish and will publish educational videos by July 1. Employers must track compliance and retain notice records for at least three years, reinforcing statewide enforcement efforts.

How the Workplace Know Your Rights Act Protects Employees

The Workplace Know Your Rights Act strengthens employee awareness by outlining essential labor protections and safeguards under California law, including:

  • Workers’ compensation rights, such as medical treatment and disability benefits for job-related injuries
  • Immigration-related protections, including limits on workplace enforcement actions
  • The right to organize, form unions, or engage in protected group activity
  • Constitutional protections during workplace interactions with law enforcement
  • Emergency contact rights if an arrest or detention occurs during work-related activities

The law also prohibits retaliation against employees who assert these rights or participate in enforcement actions, with financial penalties for violations.

Seek Help From an Employment Lawyer

Understanding new labor laws can feel overwhelming, especially when your rights are not clearly explained at work. If you believe your employer has failed to comply with the Workplace Know Your Rights Act or has retaliated against you for asserting protected rights, speaking with an employment lawyer may help clarify your options.
