SpaceX Faces DOJ Lawsuit Over Alleged Hiring Discrimination

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has taken legal action against Elon Musk’s SpaceX, accusing the rocket company of discriminatory hiring practices against refugees and those seeking or already granted asylum. According to the lawsuit filed by the DOJ, SpaceX cited federal export control laws as a justification for hiring only U.S. citizens and permanent residents. This move allegedly deterred a wider range of potential applicants.

The DOJ pointed out that these export controls, designed to protect national security and trade interests, do not exclude refugees or asylum seekers from being classified as “U.S. persons.”

Such individuals are also entitled to have access to specific technologies and information. The department claims that SpaceX failed to consider or hire from this group for various roles, ranging from specialized positions requiring advanced degrees to roles such as cooks and crane operators.

Now, the U.S. government is seeking compensation and back pay for those affected by the SpaceX hiring discrimination issue, alongside potential civil penalties. The Hawthorne, California-based company has yet to respond to these allegations.
