CALIFORNIA – Kanye West is facing a lawsuit filed by Benjamin Deshon Provo, a former bodyguard who used to work for the rapper, now known as Ye. The lawsuit, filed concerning his work at the “Donda Academy” and at a warehouse used for West’s clothing brand “Yeezy,” alleges racial discrimination and unfair labor practices.
Provo began working for West in August 2021, after spending six months at Donda Academy. According to Provo, the situation changed when the school moved, and he was assigned more responsibilities due to understaffing. He alleges that West treated black employees unfairly, being “harsh, abrasive, and demeaning” towards them, as reported by People.
The lawsuit contends that West forced Donda associates to discard books related to African American leaders and that Provo complained about wage disparities but was instructed not to discuss it with the rapper. He subsequently experienced a pay cut that his white colleagues did not suffer. Additionally, West began demanding that Provo and other employees cut their hair, which he refused to do for religious reasons, leading to his termination.
Provo seeks compensation for discrimination, retaliation, hostile work environment, and labor code violations, in addition to legal fees. He also requests a restraining order to prohibit West from operating any school for minors under 18 in California.
This is not the first lawsuit West has faced from a former Yeezy employee or Donda Academy student. He was recently sued for lockdown threats towards students and other allegations. Although West’s attorneys have not responded to these accusations, they have previously denied the charges.
West has faced a series of controversies, from accusations of physical assault to copyright conflicts. These controversies have affected his public image and musical career, despite his efforts to continue releasing new music.
In summary, Provo’s lawsuit highlights systemic issues of racial discrimination and unfair labor practices affecting Kanye West’s employees.
