Disney Hotels Face Class Action Lawsuit Over Labor Violations

A group of maintenance employees from Disney hotels has initiated a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging they are not being paid what they deserve and citing other violations of labor laws.

The complaint was filed in the Orange County Superior Court and states that workers have to bear the cost of their own tools. Additionally, they are not receiving double the required minimum wage or appropriate rates for overtime hours. The lawsuit seeks compensation of at least $1 million for back wages.

The group of plaintiffs consists of nearly 100 current and former maintenance engineers, as well as 16 assistant maintenance engineering employees. The filed documents detail that Disney failed to comply with the obligation to itemize wage statements and to establish the correct rate, as required by Wage Orders.

It is claimed that Disney violated company policy by not providing paychecks immediately upon involuntary termination or within 72 hours of voluntary separation. It also did not include owed wages in final paychecks, as stipulated in the legal documents.

The class action lawsuit for labor violations was filed by Charlie Torres, an assistant maintenance engineer.

Last year, a group of female plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against Disney for a gender pay gap. In December 2023, a Los Angeles judge certified the diverse group of workers in positions across theme parks, record labels, film production branches, and domestic distribution arms among other units. A trial to address the discrimination lawsuit is scheduled for October this year.
