San Diego, California — The California Labor Commissioner’s Office (LCO) has successfully recovered $431,601 in unpaid wages and damages for 86 carpenters. These settlements address labor violations by Howood Company Inc. on construction sites across San Diego and San Bernardino Counties.
Following a complaint from the Carpenters/Contractors Cooperation Committee, Inc. and additional wage theft reports, the LCO initiated an investigation. This led to citations issued in December 2023 against Howood Company, Wermers Multi-Family Corporation, and JPI California Construction, LLC. The violations included failure to pay minimum wage and overtime. The LCO then filed mechanic’s liens on the properties to recoup the owed funds.
Labor Commissioner Lilia García-Brower emphasized the office’s dedication to ensuring workers receive compensation. She highlighted the effectiveness of mechanic’s liens in recovering earned wages, noting that early detection through industry collaboration is crucial.
The LCO’s investigation revealed that Howood failed to pay workers for weeks at three Redlands and San Diego construction sites.
