San Diego, California — Employees of a local water treatment company have reported delayed and incomplete paychecks, raising concerns about unpaid wages and financial stability. Workers at Puragain Water say the payroll issues have affected their ability to cover living expenses, while company leadership maintains that most outstanding payments have been resolved.
San Diego Puragain Water Employees Report Missing Paychecks
Puragain Water installer Alexander Denney reported that he missed his first paycheck in September and received his next payment more than a week late. He said the delays made it difficult for employees to afford rent and other necessities.
Another employee, Romulo Perez, said some paychecks were up to 50% below his expected earnings, forcing him to postpone plans to purchase a home.
Company owner Larson attributed the payroll problems to operational and financial disruptions associated with a divorce and changes in company control. He stated that most affected workers had received their outstanding payments and that remaining issues were being addressed.
However, Denney, who was eventually furloughed, filed a wage claim seeking unpaid compensation and applicable penalties.
What California Law Says About Unpaid Wages
Under California Labor Code Section 204, most employees must receive their wages at least twice monthly on established paydays. Financial difficulties generally do not excuse employers from meeting these obligations.
Workers experiencing delayed or incomplete payments should understand their rights:
- Timely payment: Employers must follow legally required payroll schedules.
- Wage recovery: Employees can file claims with the California Labor Commissioner’s Office to recover unpaid wages.
- Additional penalties: Certain late payments may qualify for statutory penalties under Labor Code Section 210.
- Supporting evidence: Pay stubs, timesheets, employment agreements, and payroll communications can help establish discrepancies.
Employees may pursue applicable wage claims even while remaining employed. Available remedies depend on the circumstances of each case.
