Minimum Wage Increases Across SoCal Starting July 1

California – The minimum wage is increasing in several Southern California cities and counties beginning July 1, giving many workers a higher hourly rate. While California already raised its statewide minimum wage earlier this year, local ordinances in some communities now require employers to pay even higher wages.

Minimum Wage Rates Rise Across Southern California

Several Southern California jurisdictions are implementing new minimum wage increases effective July 1 under local wage ordinances. Earlier in 2026, California’s statewide minimum wage increased from $16.50 to $16.90 per hour.

However, cities and counties may require employers to pay higher local rates. In the City of Los Angeles, the minimum wage rises to $18.42 per hour, while employees working in unincorporated Los Angeles County will receive $18.47 per hour.

Other scheduled increases include:

  • Malibu: $17.91 per hour
  • Pasadena: $18.57 per hour
  • Santa Monica: $18.47 per hour

Some industries, including parts of San Diego’s hospitality sector, also remain subject to separate local wage requirements.

What California Workers Should Know About Wage Rights

California law provides important protections for employees when local minimum wage ordinances apply. Employers generally must pay the highest applicable wage rate based on the work location, not just the statewide minimum.

Workers may have legal options if they experience:

  • Payment below the required local or state minimum wage
  • Unpaid wages or wage shortages
  • Off-the-clock work without compensation
  • Unpaid overtime when legally required
  • Retaliation after reporting wage violations or filing a complaint

Depending on the circumstances, employees may be able to recover unpaid wages, penalties, and interest, as well as other remedies, under California labor laws. Keeping pay stubs, schedules, and time records can help support a wage claim if a dispute arises.
