Judge Finds Grimmway Farms Guilty of Disability Discrimination

Sacramento, California — A federal judge has ruled that Grimmway Farms, one of the largest agricultural employers in the state, engaged in systemic disability discrimination against its workers. The decision, stemming from a lawsuit filed by the California Civil Rights Department, paves the way for a trial to determine damages and further protections for farmworkers.

Judge Rules Grimmway Farms Violated Disability Rights

On September 22, 2025, U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd issued a ruling finding Grimmway Farms violating disability rights laws. Court records revealed that from 2016 to 2024, the company often placed employees with injuries or permanent restrictions on unpaid leave instead of providing reasonable accommodations.

Evidence showed that at least 96% of workers referred to its internal “interactive process section” ended up sidelined without pay. Some employees who had been performing modified duties were also removed from their positions.

The court determined this pattern amounted to systemic disability discrimination. As a result, the case will proceed toward trial to establish damages and injunctive relief.

Legal Protections for Employees Facing Disability Discrimination

California and federal law prohibit employers from discriminating against workers with disabilities. Instead, employers must provide accommodations that allow employees to continue working when possible. In disability discrimination cases, workers may be entitled to compensation and corrective measures. Key legal protections include:

  • Reasonable accommodations such as modified duties, assistive devices, or reassignment.
  • Interactive process obligations require employers to explore feasible solutions rather than defaulting to unpaid leave.
  • Anti-retaliation protections ensure employees are not penalized for asserting their rights.
  • Group claims through state agencies that can seek remedies for entire groups of affected workers.
