$1.5 Million Recovered for Labor Violations at China Lake

CALIFORNIA – The discovery of labor violations at China Lake has sparked concern. The U.S. Department of Labor has recovered over $1.5 million in back wages and damages for over 400 workers in the Ridgecrest region.

The Department’s Wage and Hour Division has led an initiative to ensure compliance with federal labor regulations on federally funded projects. This initiative focuses on contractors involved in the $3.9 billion earthquake recovery program at NAWS China Lake.

Over two years, thorough investigations revealed violations of labor laws, including the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts, the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act, the Service Contract Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act.

More than $1.5 million in back wages and $32,291 in damages were recovered for 413 workers, and civil penalties were imposed on employers totaling $14,020.

Employers must comply with federal labor regulations, including paying prevailing wages and providing health and welfare benefits. Those who fail to comply may face significant legal consequences.

While federal projects like these can strengthen the regional economy, employers must fulfill all legal obligations to ensure workers receive fair compensation for their hard work.

The initiative has also involved active collaboration with local stakeholders, including Construction Officers at China Lake, monthly meetings, and outreach events with local unions, such as Iron Workers Local 433 Union.
